The Full Story
The Women's Premier League (WPL) traces its roots back to 2009 when it was established as a player-run organization aiming to provide a competitive platform for women's rugby in the United States. At its inception, the league emerged out of a growing need for a structured and high-caliber competition that would allow women rugby players to showcase their skills and compete at a top level. Recognizing the lack of opportunities for women in rugby, especially at the elite level, a group of players and national team coaches spearheaded by the legendary Kathy Flores and Alex Williams took the initiative to create a league that would address this gap and provide a pathway for advancement in the sport.

In its early years, the WPL operated on a relatively small scale, with 8 teams representing different regions across the country. Despite its modest beginnings, the league quickly gained momentum and attracted attention from players, coaches, and supporters who saw its potential to transform women's rugby in the US. Interest in the league grew, leading to expansion and the establishment of a formal structure to govern the competition.

13 teams across the country have competed in the WPL over it's 15 year history: All Blues Rugby, Atlanta Harlequins, Beantown RFC, Chicago North Shore, Colorado Gray Wolves, DC Furies, Keystone Rugby, Life West Gladiatrix, Minnesota Valkyries, New York Rugby Club, Oregon Sports Union, San Diego Surfers, and Twin Cities Amazons. The Colorado Gray Wolves hold the current title, as well as the record for most WPL Championships, with five wins (2014, 2015, 2019, 2023, 2024), while the All Blues captured three championships (2011, 2012, 2022) and were runners-up in 2023 and 2024, and New York Rugby Club also captured three championships in 2009, 2010, and 2017.

Throughout its history, the WPL has served as a vital catalyst for the growth and development of women's rugby in the United States. By providing a platform for elite competition and fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment, the league has played a significant role in advancing the sport and breaking down barriers for female athletes. In 2023, the WPL teams approved the Ignite the Change initiative to move toward a professional structure. This movement served as the base for the newly-founded Women's Elite Rugby — check out the league and the WPL athletes who are taking the game to the next level!
